A Piece of Paper

Humayra Hasin, a DEH student is highly interested in crafting papers. Let’s see what she has to say about this form of art – an interview taken by Siham Sarawat and Navid Anjum Hasan:

  • Why did you choose this idea of crafting papers as your hobby?

I find pleasure in it and it is a good way of passing time. It is also fun creating and crafting. It is like a game to me because you never know what kind of design you may come up with when you do so. There are lots if ideas out there to work on and as a form of art, I think, this is one of the very best, you know? I personally find it satisfying and think that anyone can have a go at it if they are willing to know how crafting paper works.

  • Why paper and not anything else?

-I choose paper because it is easily available and convenient to work with than anything else I think. If you think about painting, you need pastels, color pencils, drawing boards and what not. But here, all you need is a scissor and papers to have fun with.

  • What kind of paper materials do you use for crafting?

-I mostly use pom pom papers, art papers, and sponge wood. Different types of papers serve different types of purposes. For example, you need to use art papers when you need to a firm background to attach the otherwise satiny art-works, and pom poms when you need to make easily shapeable paper flowers, alpanas or other delicate designs. You can also use sponge wood to mold light and carriable wall hangers. The list goes on.

  • How did you get inspired?

-Well, the Inspiration came from my elder sister. She has an event management company.  I also got inspiration from creative programs on television like Art Attack. Besides, anything that is creative and gives you the artistic freedom to do whatever you want to do, I am all for that. Crafting papers just happened to be the one I chose voluntarily, that’s all.

  • What events do you cover?

-Events like birthdays, weddings, bridal showers, baby showers etc, occasions that involve get-togethers, or simple outings even with friends and family. Even when I am at home and feel like doing something mentally rewarding, I craft papers.

  • Who are your clients?

-People with different thoughts and ideas who want something creative to ornate, to decorate their familial programs with a unique flavor, a new outlook, and a possible colorful change of the everyday setting.

  • What media do you use for promoting?

-Social websites like Facebook and Instagram. They help a lot. Besides, people who are satisfied with the type of crafting I do, tend to call me time to time when they need it. When you do it out of pure passion, I guess, nothing really stops you from being appreciated for what you are good at.

  • What are your future plans?

-To extend from the visual world to something concrete, that is to a shop. In the shop, there will be different sections for kids and adults with lots of options and lots of paper materials to choose from. It’s my dream and I am working on it.

-Thank you for your time!
