DEH organized two public lectures on July 26, 2018, by Prof. Manosh Chowdhury on “The Construction Masculinity in Bangladesh” and Prof. Azfar Hussain, the summer distinguished professor on “Kazi Nazrul Islam, ‘World Literature’ and Internationalism.” This event was a great success with spontaneous feedbacks given and received from the speaker as well as the audience. The program was held as a part of the annual Doctoral Inaugural Lectures programme celebrating the excellent work of Ph.D. students here at ULAB.
Revisiting Poe
On July 24, 2018, ULAB’s Writing Lab and English Zone organized a seminar on Edgar Allan Poe conducted by Dr. Shamsad Mortuza, the head of the Department of English and Humanities. Open for all ULABians, the seminar was a great success as students were able to see the already much-admired poet in a whole new light both on an academic as well as personal level. Inspired by the much enthusiastic response of the audience, a second session titled “Once Again on Poe” took place on 31 July 2018.
DEH Creative Writing Certificate Course, 2018
A three-week long Creative Writing Certificate Course, organized by the Department of English and Humanities, had begun on July 6, 2018, and ended on July 21, 2018. With 13 participants, the intensive sessions were being held on both Fridays and Saturdays at ULAB. The program was designed to inspire budding writers who will be guided by distinguished members of the local and international writers’ community such as Dr. Kaiser Haq, Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam, Dr. Niaz Zaman, Dr. Fakrul Alam, Dr. Razia Sultana Khan, Dr. Azfar Hussain, Dr. Shamsad Mortuza, Aasha Mehreen Amin, Nausheen Eusuf, Dr. Sohana Manzoor, and Arifa Ghani Rahman. Course session topics included poetry, creative nonfiction, journalistic writing, short fiction, translations, editing, and publishing.
DEH Orientation of Batch 182
The Department of English and Humanities held an exciting and fun-filled program to welcome the Spring 2018 term undergraduate and MA freshers to ULAB in the university’s auditorium on July 4, 2018, at 12.30 pm. The Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, Prof. Kaiser Haq, took the stage to welcome and inspire the students to make the best out of their next four years of university life by not only studying hard but playing hard as well. He strongly encouraged students to attend the numerous programs constantly happening at ULAB and to join the clubs to enhance their extra-curricular activities. The Head of Department, Prof. Shamsad Mortuza, welcomed the freshers and introduced the faculty members to the students. Paper Canoe, the ULAB Literary Society, presented an exciting line-up including dances, songs, and a skit by the ULAB Theater Club.
Mukhora Ramani Bashikaran Staged by Theater ULAB at Nazrul Institute
Theatre ULAB staged Mukhora Ramani Bashikaran, the famous romantic comedy-drama of William Shakespeare originally entitled The Taming of the Shrew. The practice to perfect the drama started more than a month ago where club members of Theatre ULAB worked tirelessly to get the production on stage. The drama was a perfect example of what Theatre ULAB accomplishes to do as a part of their club activity. The whole drama by supervised by Adviser of Theatre ULAB, Mr. Muntasir Mamun, also a faculty member in DEH. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. H M Jahirul Haque, ULAB faculties, and ULAB Admins were present during the drama along with the enthusiastic support of ULAB students.
Risk-a-Verse: Poetry Recitation Contest
On April 5, the Department of English & Humanities at ULAB organized a poetry recitation contest. After weeks of practice under the guidance of Dr. Mahruba Tasneem, the participant students performed before an enthusiastic audience comprised of DEH students and faculty members. The Judges Panel was presided over by Prof. Kaiser Haq, the renowned poet and the Dean of Arts and Humanities of ULAB. Dr. Sohana Manzoor, a faculty member of DEH, assisted him with the verdict.
Soft Skills Workshop
Department of English and Humanities organized a series of workshops on soft skills, the sessions of which were conducted by the respected faculty members of the department. The four sessions of the series were on Email Etiquette, APA Style, Public Speaking & Presentation and lastly, CV & Cover Letter Writing. The 1st session was on email etiquettes which was conducted by Dr. Sohana Manzoor, on 28 March 2018, the second was on 2 April 2018 by Jennifer Reid on public speaking with the third on 3 April 2018 by Dr. Mahruba on writing a proper CV, and the final one on 4 April 2018 by Dr. Asifa Sultana about referencing.
