Where Dreams Abide: A Look-Back
-Jannatul Ferdaous Lamia
When I walked in the Department of English and Humanities at ULAB for my very first class, I did not know how many adventures were waiting for me in the coming four years of my life. However, since I was already very intrigued about studying Literature, I knew it would be way more interesting than I could have ever imagined.
I was right. When they say ULAB has the best educators for English Literature and Linguistics, they are not lying. If anyone wants to experience “study” with adventure, then DEH at ULAB is the place best suited. I just didn’t study in ULAB, I lived there! It was a warm piece of place for my escape. I still remember the thrill of giving my first speech as fresher to my first presentation.
As days passed by, I learned about the clubs ULAB offers to its students. If I talk about them I cannot leave out ULAB’s “Adventure Club”. Where have not we visited from there! From Bandarban to St. Martins, and Khulna to Rajshahi! Every year, the club members used to take a name and we would be there. As DEH members in the club, we learned how to survive in bone-cracking cold and scorching heat of the sun and then find the creative beauty that lies within every little detail in Nature. From preparing tents to lighting up the bonfire! We were also given tasks to look for food and cook in the open space. It made us adults and injected love for nature into our blood.
Talking about my experience in ULAB and not mentioning the DEH domestic and international conferences will be just absurd. Every day or the other we students used to volunteer in those programs in various manners. It helped me build up my professional skills even better. The faculty members were just more than supportive. They even were more encouraging than we students were.
My horizons were getting wider with each semester. From mastering in poetry recitation to act in intense dramas, all were memories to cherish for a lifetime. DEH at ULAB has given me the vision to see and feel the world beyond our imagination. It taught me compassion and immense philosophy for liberal thinking. I have been in an affair with our culture and art of our country ever since and I live my life by this. Thanks, DEH and of course, my alma mater, ULAB!
