(Poem) The Sky and The Shore

By Noshin Tasnim Hassan

Never so stagnant,

You’d always ask:

“Is it too soon for you,

Am I going too fast?”

“No,” said I

But was I so sure?

You ruled over the sky

While I the shore.

All yours, the rain and the seven skies

Like a phoenix you soar, higher than a sky-rise.

All of them bow down to you, you are supreme

You make them blush and feel so loved in your moonbeam.

But the seven seas, the land, the trees that I do reign,

They’ll never see again how much you lie, and the love you feign.

Sometimes in scarlet, vermillion, red wine

That power of yours never dwindles or declines.

Your plumage so rich, always scintillating

Your mind so fickle, consistently calculating.

I saw what you displayed and fell forthwith

Always so dazzling, says even Lilith.

Passion burns in your eternal flame,

For me to drown one’s sorrows is only a child’s game.

The hot, crackling inferno that you possess

Once had my deep cerulean thoughts drenched in holiness.

Will you engulf me, or shall I you?

For it’s the Battle of the Two Worlds

So true, so cold.

Your kingdom rained down on me

Made my trees grow lush

Incessantly.

Also, set my flowers on your fire

Progressively.

Can we ever be paramours, I would wonder.

My land, my seas, you did plunder.

Is it too late, gone, or over too soon?

My tsunamis and tremors, all witnesses your moon.

I have wilted, I have withered, my reign so weak

You glide higher than ever, evermore fleek.

Took me longer than expected

But still, I’m here.

My epiphany still hollers at me

My head now clear.

As you rule over the sky

And I the shore

You and I can’t be together

Alas, nevermore.
