The Phone Call

Radia -Al- Rashid

“I know, you the young generation don’t believe in supernatural stuff as we do, yet lemme remind you again of the mirror’s bane …” the landlord’s wife said while heading to the door.

“Oh well, Mrs. Robinson, I will keep it in check. No worries.” I grinned to brush off the fear that was so apparent on her face.

“Can’t you just put on a piece of cloth on the mirror at least?” she rubbed the bridge of her nose.

“I don’t… It’s just a mirror facing the bed… What disaster can possibly happen except for the encountering of my own sleepy-grumpy face in the middle of the night?” I chuckled lightheartedly.

Mrs. Robinson shot me an it’s-not-a-freaking-joke look. I realized the heaviness of the situation and nodded at her, “Alright, whatever you say…” I covered the mirror with a table cloth from top to bottom. I could hear the chuckle of my friend, Melissa, as I covered it. I eyed her and mouthed to stop it.

“So, Mrs. Robinson, you can leave now I suppose? If any problem occurs I’ll definitely let you know.” I tried to grin at the stubborn and superstitious yet confident lady.

“Well, young ladies, hope you will love the place. It’s really wonderful but you just need to keep your eyes open.” she ducked out of the apartment closing the door behind her.

“Gosh! Charlotte, you just got yourself stuck in that witch’s activated ring.” Melissa let out a peal of loud laughter.
“Shutttup! The apartment is good. I don’t care about some witch-like wife of the landlord. She’s not gonna be here 24/7. But the lady sounded so mysterious, don’t you think?”

“I bet she is mysterious, Charlie! Just keep your eyes open while I’m going to the washroom.” Melissa playfully smirked. I laughed in reply and sat on a chair beside the bed to start unpacking my clothes.

My phone chimed suddenly and my heart skipped a beat at the sound.

“O boy! Ain’t I stressed out.” mumbling the words I reached out for the mobile.

“Melissa? Seriously dude? You are calling me again from the washroom?” Before sliding the screen my fingers stopped right there. Melissa’s phone was resting on the couch right next to me and it was… well, it was locked. The phone in my hand was still ringing and there was absolutely no mistake about who it was… It’s Melissa. How was it possible! I felt too light-headed to think anything logically… A bone-crushing scream of Melissa shook me to the core. I abruptly got up and headed towards the washroom and instantly froze at the sight of the mirror.

WHERE IS THE TABLE CLOTH?
